If this film had only relied on natural lighting, for example, the visuals would not have been the same at all. Then you notice a bright planet or moon in the sky surrounded by darkness. This scene is very dark all around, with some light coming from the back, giving the astronauts a silhouetted look in a way. The benefits of the high contrasting, vibrant colors, and even dark and shadowy lighting is that it makes this movie very visually interesting and stimulating to watch and is pleasing to the eye. This scene uses a lot of red color and intensifies the visual stimulation and feelings of what is happening. Naming Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece is particularly challenging because the director rarely made a film that didn’t qualify as a bona fide masterpiece. You can see that this scene is very bright, and there are no shadows, and the contrast of the black makes the image pop.
