![]() ![]() ![]() We're still very early in the cycle here. More often than not, the player is eventually traded. Everybody involved insists that nothing is wrong. But we know how these things tend to work. It might be an aggressive attempt to destabilize the Hawks in an effort to eventually land Young themselves. This might just be speculation on their part. So why are we here? Well, Bleacher Report's Chris Haynes reported Thursday that rival executives believe Young could be the next superstar to demand a trade. Some slight roster tweaks and a coach that runs a modern offense would go a long way here.Īre we clear on those things? Good. When a coach feuds with the star, you side with the star. Mike D'Antoni could fix these problems in a single training camp. They're a middle-of-the-pack transition offense despite having two of the better transition conductors in basketball. The Hawks take the fifth-fewest 3-pointers in the NBA, but rank second in mid-range jumpers. At the very least, Young's 3-point shooting is going to improve from 30.7 percent to something like the 35 percent he's shot for his career. There are just so many paths to internal improvement here. The Hawks almost certainly shouldn't trade him this season.They almost never get traded, period, but when they do, it almost always comes in the offseason. Players this young and this good just don't get traded in-season. Young is a 2021 All-NBA selection who came two wins short of the Finals. Kidd had not made the playoffs yet or earned All-NBA honors by that point in his career. The closest thing we have to a precedent for a 24-year-old All-NBA guard getting traded in the middle of the season is Jason Kidd in 1996. The Atlanta Hawks star guard is almost certainly not getting traded this season.We need to make two things about Trae Young clear from the start: ![]()
